Some cry genes from the bacterium Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt), have been transferred into rice plants to express insecticidal proteins against lepidopterans. Few Bt rice varieties show high resistance against common and serious caterpillars like stem borers, pyralid, rice leaffolder etc., resulting in higher yield, lower cost of production, contributing to food security in developing countries.
