Silk Properties & the Issue of 'Filament-denier'

摘要

Common myth is that higher the denier of filament, better will be the strength of the silk yarn. On the contrary, studies have shown that the finer filaments are stronger and even as compared to coarser ones. Evaluation of specific breeds that would produce finer filament deniers would be an interesting issue for future research, opine the authors. Since decades it remained a matter of debate whether development of 'finer' or 'coarser' denier of filament should be aimed at. An analysis of the role this 'denier' plays in the behaviour and property of silk yarn obtained from such filaments during its use, leads to a finding that finer denier filaments give rise to more strength, cohesion, better evenness, improved glossiness and better flexibility to the yarn as compared to coarser denier- filament yarn.
