LACEWING SILK - TOUGHEST!

While most people know that silkworms produce silk, few are aware of the fact that other insects like wasps, ants, water beetles and fleas also create their own silk. One such insect, the common green Australian lacewing, has attracted the attention of researchers at the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO) in Australia. The silk produced by the lacewing is tougher and up to six times more elastic than that produced by the silkworm. Its unique structure, which differs from that of other silk producing insects, is also easier to recreate artificially than silkworm silk.
