Indian Railways is one of the largest transport system in the world running approximately 23,000 trains carrying more than 23 million people and 3 million tonnes of freight on a daily basis. In the past few years, IR has seen some of the most challenging times. Indian Railways had been witnessing declining modal share in both freight and passenger segments and was facing severe criticism over delayed trains, safety issues and services in both passenger and freight segment.
