Diamond Jubilee Celebration of First AC Traction in the Country

The Rajkharswan-Dangoaposi section of SER is of immense importance since its opening in 1924, primarily to carry iron ore from mines. In 1959, Indian Railways adopted 25KV AC traction in the Rajkharswan-Dangoaposi Section as an efficient and economical mode of transport. The first AC Traction of India was introduced on 15 December, 1959 in the Mining Hub of Rajkharswan-Dangoaposi section of Chakradharpur Division. The first train on 25 KV alternating current (AC) traction ran on that day. With this path breaking event, India became the second country after Japan in Asia to adopt 25 KV AC Traction. A few years later, in 1961, the Chittaranjan Locomotive Works started production of electric locomotives that would use the 25 KV traction. The first OHE maintenance depot of the country for 25 KV traction was set up at Chaibasa of Chakradharpur division.
