摘要

The visionary leaders of Independent India planned to build up a locomotive manufacturing unit to fulfil the needs of Indian Railways. Chittaranjan near Mihijam on Bihar and West Bengal border was found to be the suitable site for all around development of backward area. The site was adjacent to the main railway line from Howrah to Delhi and the hydroelectric power stations of Damodar Valley Corporation / Maithon were in the vicinity of this area. This assured adequate power source for the industries.
