Engine Development Directorate was set up in RDSO in April 1987 with the objectives of Improvement in the rail diesel traction technology for better fuel efficiency, higher reliability and Increased availability. The directorate has been functional for development of technology for increasing power output of existing diesel engines. Besides we provide e R&D backup to Railways and Production Units to Maintain quality Facilitate indigenisation . Over the years the various objectives have also been additionally assigned like Development of emission compliant engine technologies, Development of green alternate fuels and appropriate/contemporary technologies for rail traction, Development of natural gas based locomotives for Indian Railways. The Directorate has various state of the art capabilities and facilities like Engine Testing - 400 to 6000 kW, Computerized engine test beds, Mass emission measurement system, Mobile Emission Test Car (ETC) for measurement of exhaust emissions of the Locomotives, Calibration of measuring instruments, etc. Calibration of Fuel Injection Equipments.
