Removal of Lead in Aqueous Medium by Tamarindnut Carbon

Activated carbon prepared from bicarbonate treated tamarindnut carbon (BTNC) has been used for the adsorption of Pb(Ⅱ) at an initial concentration of 10 mg/L, agitation time over a range of (30-300 min), adsorbent dosage 80-300 mg/100 mL at an optimum pH of 5.0. Quantitative removal of Pb(Ⅱ) takes place with an initial concentration of 10 mg/L and with the equilibration time of 4 hr for BTNC dose of 100 mg/100 mL. The process of uptake obeys Freundlich and Langmuir isotherm. The kinetics of adsorption obeyed first order reversible kinetic rate equation. The efficiency of BTNC is compared with a commercial granular activated carbon (CAC). Column studies were conducted using BTNC and CAC. It showed the total capacity of 1557 and 100 mg for BTNC, CAC, respectively under optimum conditions.
