Characterization and Treatment Coal Washery/Damodar Water for Quality Improvement

摘要

The present study consist of collection of water samples from different process levels of coal washery, namely feeding, thickening, outlet points and of the Damodar river for evaluation of their quality. The following parameters, like pH, EC, colour, total solids, volatile solids, hardness, chlorides, DO, BOD, COD, total nitrogen, active phosphorous, oil and grease, sulphate, alkalinity, potassium and heavy metals were analyzed. Further these water samples were treated with activated carbon (AC) prepared from agro-industrial residues (coconut shell, wood dust, paddy husk, and coconut fiber) and lignite. The treated water samples were analysed for pH, EC, colour, total solids and total hardness. The results of the study revealed that AC prepared from low cost materials, like agro-industrial wastes had the potential to be used as adsorbents in filtration bed for treating coal washery water.
