Water is one of the precious natural resources with almost limited fixed availability. Due to rapid growth in population, urbanization, development of agricultural and industrial products demand, etc., per capita availability of utilizable water is reducing. India is the largest producer of sugar in the world and per capita consumption of sugar in the country is also about 13 kg per person per year. In past few decades, Indian sugar industry has developed at a high growth rate and this put a lot of concern in understanding water demand of this industry. Also, as one of the largest user of water, sugar industry has an important responsibility to practice water audit, which is an effective management tool for identifying losses, optimizing various water uses and thus conserving the water for industrial sector. A study has been conducted to understand the water usage pattern in the different processes of sugar manufacturing industry. This study comprises of the typical water balance and overall wastewater characteristics and quantity. Study also deals with different water conservation techniques and suggests reuse patterns for overall wastewater minimization in sugar industry.
