Self-compacting concrete (SCC) flows under its own weight and it does not require any external vibration for compaction. This paper describes a sequential procedure developed for achieving SCC. Fifteen mixes were investigated. The water/ cement ratio was maintained constant for all excepting for the initial mixes. Superplasticiser was employed to increase the workability of normal slump concrete. The Superplasticiser dosage was also kept constant. To obtain the required flow in SCC, fly ash (very fine) replacement of 5, 10, 15, 20 and 25 percent, respectively, of coarse aggregate was adopted. A viscosity modifying admixture was also tried, in different dosages, to stabilise the mix further. Slump flow test and L-Box tests as recommended in literature were carried out to obtain the properties of flowability and workability of fresh concrete. The mechanical properties of hardened concrete were also investigated in terms of compressive strength. The results show that using the sequential procedure developed in this study, SCC could be achieved successfully.
