摘要

The discusser would like to congratulate the authors — Mr Ravi and Vasant Kanitkar — for throwing light on a very practical topic, which is very important to the design of multi-storey buildings of our country. The draft code of IS 1893, which was under circulation for more than 2 to 3 years, did not contain clause 7.10. This clause was introduced in the final code only after witnessing the failure of several multistorey buildings during the 2001 Bhuj earthquake. To my knowledge the factor of 2.5 specified in clause 7.10.3(a) and the factor of 1.5 specified in clause 7.10.3(b) of the code were chosen arbitrarily without any scientific investigations. Hence this paper, which compares the base shears based on this approach given by the code with the results of an inelastie analysis, assumes greater importance.
