A number of rapid chloride resistance tests have been developed in an attempt to provide practical means of rapidly assessing the potential chloride resistance of concrete. The chloride conductivity test has the advantage of allowing extremely rapid measurement of the chloride resistance of concrete under controlled laboratory conditions. The technique has been shown to be sensitive to material, processing and environmental factors that influence chloride resistance. Chloride conductivity results have also been correlated with long-term chloride ingress rates into marine exposure samples. Testing concrete for chloride conductivity forms the basis for a pragmatic chloride prediction model being used in South Africa. The rapid nature of the test does however have some negative side-effects that limits its applicability, particularly for high performance concrete where drying damage and inadequate saturation may occur.
