Health assessment of a marine structure

The fourth oil berth (J4) of Mumbai Port Trust (MbPT) is located near Jawahar Dweep, formerly known as Butcher Island, off Mumbai's eastern sea front (Figure 1). The berth was commissioned in the year 1984. It has three structures viz. a berthing structure, a jetty and an approach trestle. The berthing structure comprises of eleven circular caissons which are used for mooring and are connected by a walkway made of structural steel. The berthing structure and the jetty deteriorated due to the saline atmosphere. Restorative repairs were carried out in the year 1995 with epoxy mortar and other polymer-modified mortars. Over the years, the steel walkway was damaged due to saltwater spray and was replaced by an RCC walkway in the year 1996. Later, in the year 2005, the cantilever slabs of the approach trestlernsupporting the pipelines were restored by providing additional support in the form of mild steel brackets. A few months ago, some of the structures were showing signs of deterioration and needed to be restored.
