Metakaolin is a valuable admixture for cement concrete applications with twice the reactivity of most other pozzolanas. Replacing a small percentage of Portland cement with this pozzolana produces a concrete mix, which exhibits favorable engineering properties, including: the filler effect, the acceleration of OPC hydration, and the pozzolanic reaction. The filler effect is immediate, while the effect of pozzolanic reaction occurs after a few days. The paper on page 9 discusses the compressive strength development of concretes containing a combination of Portland cement, fly ash and metakaolin.
