Centuries before the manufacturing of cement came into being, dry mix mortars using aggregates and lime or gypsum as binders were known to constructions of those eras. However, with the introduction of cement in 19th century, the entire construction process changed and new applications became possible. Masonry mortars and renders could be mixed at site to make the building process much easier and more durable. However, it was not until the World War II, that the first development of drymix mortar took place. In Germany, it was driven by the need for rebuilding of the country in 1950s following the war. In the 1960s, several important innovations took place in dry mix mortar technology. For example, introduction of cellulose ether for water retention was made and the invention of redispersible polymer powders was another breakthrough-technology that made the modern drymix mortar.
