Dendropthae falcate (Horitoky madang) and Boswella serrata (Agnijhar) are used from the ancient time due to their antifertility effect. But the actual mechanism of action is not yet known. The antifertility effect of methanolic extract of these two plants was studied in mice to evaluate the folkloric use of the plant. These two plants were collected; sun dried, pulverized and extracted with methanol using soxhelet apparatus. Methanolic extract were given intraperitoneally to the female mature mice. The vaginal smear was stained and examined under microscope throughout the treatment period. On the 15th day, mice were sacrificed and the weight of ovaries and uterus were taken. It was observed that the estrous cycle became irregular after certain period and the weight of ovaries and uterus were reduced significantly which indicate that the extract of Dendropthae falcate and Boswella serrata have the antifertility activity in female mice.
