CapWIN Gives First Responders in the Field Control Over Interoperability - The Power of Data in Public Safety

In June 2004, the Capital Wireless Integrated Network (CapWIN) began production operations in the National Capital Region (NCR) in and around Washington, D.C. CapWIN is a suite of tools designed to provide mobile and fixed station first responders and support staff with: 1. incident management and coordination capabilities; 2. one-to-one and group communication (messaging and email); 3. automated notifications and alerts; 4. a robust directory or individual first responders; and 5. access to operational data / resources, including multiple state and federal law enforcement criminal databases, HAZMAT data, health data, and GIS information. data interoperability for first responders across the NCR. The successful development of the CapWIN system will have significant and positive impacts for emergency response and incident management as well as intelligence coordination, preparedness, and knowledge management.
