Tinting and Toning as a Restoration Technique for Archive Film

The Archive Film Restoration Department at Soho Images offers a service to prepare restorations of coloured nitrate film using modern print film stocks and the original tintng and toning techniques. The images are closer to the originals in their pristine condition than any reproduction on modern colour film. Hand coloured and stencilled prints have generally been preserved on colour negative, but, although several methods exist, much of the tinted and toned material was not preserved in colour. We know that many archives had experimented in the past with tinting and toning but that few complete restorations have been done by these methods since the procedures ceased to be used commercially about 1930.
