Dynamic Range Wide and Narrow - Can it be done?

One of the pleasures of watching films in the cinema is the overwhelming power of the film soundtrack whether it be the rich orchestral music or the roar of approaching helicopters. In the last twenty years the available dynamic range has been getting wider and wider and mixers and producers have been quick to make use of every potential improvement. What has not been tackled so quickly is how this dynamic range should be adapted to other media where these extremes are unsuitable.
