More often than not plate production is now the final stage in the mass production of newspapers by means of digital technology, though this may prove to be different in future. The structure of newspaper circulation will change. Circulation splitting, re gionalisation, personalisation, "Print on Demand" and "Distributed Printing" are key phrases which could affect future trends in newspaper printing technology. Topicality and sales costs are two more factors, and the demand for colour and cost-effective production must not be forgotten. Another is that the newspaper quality should not be compromised.
