摘要

Aiming at shifting from language resources to language services, we spent five years to develop the Language Grid, a service-oriented multi-language infrastructure from 2006. Language resources like dictionary data and machine translation software that are traditionally distributed as CD copies and downloading services should be transformed to language services that can be easily available through the Internet. In this paper, we introduce the infrastructure software that enables collecting and sharing language services, and the intercultural collaboration environment that enables easy usage of language services registered in the infrastructure software. Moreover, we propose the federated operation model that enables different organizations to collaborate and operate the service infrastructure together. We show an example of federated operation of the Language Grid between Kyoto and Bangkok. Further, the Language Grid can be also regarded as a successful practice of participatory design by users. We use several typical examples to show how development of the Language Grid by research teams and intercultural collaboration activities by NPO/NGO users of the Language Grid affect each other.
