Major Results of Medical ICT WINDS Experiments by Full Utilization of Open Source Software (OSS)

摘要

The Japanese WINDS satellite shows the top level bandwidth of Gbps level. To promote our Medical ICT experiment we installed the satellite station at YRP venture building with Ka-band VSAT system and the Interferometer for the measurement of rain fall attenuation of Ka-band satellite receiving signal. We confirmed strong request of the transfer of DICOM data from the latest medical equipments using satellite links in the severe disasters such as in 2011. We have long experience of utilization of open source developing methods since 1970's for global cooperation of the Very Long Baseline interferometer (VLBI). Using our experiences of OSS we could improve Linux TCP stack throughput of WINDS IP networks experiment very effectively, because we can modify and upgrade OSS such as Linux kernel freely. We attained the experimental results of medical ICT experiments such as DICOM data transfer experiments by full utilization of OSS positively. The advancement of Linux kernels and the TCP protocol stacks are now overcoming the TCP throughput problem caused by the big latency of GEO satellites. We also developed WINDS Ka-band real-time Interferometer system to measure the rain fall attenuation of Ka-band radio waves from WINDS on the YRP Venture Building using OSS fully. We now shift to use both the multi-cores Linux PCs' GPU huge powers and also the emerging Android Linux OSS technology to respond the social requirements for more ubiquitous emergency communication using the satellite communication.
