A Prototype of a Solar Powered Energy Proportional Web Server Cluster

摘要

To resolve the environmental issues such as increasing CO_2 emissions and radiation contamination by nuclear power plants, photovoltaic generation has been promoted toward an effective use of green energy resource. Though the management of this limited power supply is a challenging task for practical realization, this clean energy for computing makes it possible to obtain computing resources wherever the sunlight is available and to expand the frontier of ICT services. To provide ICT services in digitally divided areas, we made a prototype of web server cluster powered by a photovoltaic system, which adjusts the number of active servers according to the request rates and the generated power. The energy consumption is designed to be proportional to the processing speed. This paper introduces the system architecture and shows the energy proportional performance of our system.
