cdma2000 is one of the proposals currently being reviewed for then3G systems. This paper addresses one of the areas of improvement ofncdma2000 over the IS-95based systems-the standby time of the phone. Thisnpaper proposes a novel scheme for the paging channel by splitting itninto three parts. It analyzes the design of the quick paging channeln(QPCH) and characterizes its performance for various conditions. Thisnpaper also looks at a way to put this common channel in soft handoff,nthereby improving the reliability and leading to a better standby timenfor the cdma2000 phones. Both the physical layer and networknimplications are analyzed in detail
