A wide variety of applications, such as filters for satellite communication systems, microwave analog signal processors, wideband communication components, and detection systems for biological applications, have benefited from the novel synthesized passive components with smooth profiles reviewed in this article. The main characteristics of the novel synthesis techniques employed are as follows: ? They are direct because they avoid the use of lumped-element circuit models; just the target frequency response is used as starting point.
