The inaugural Student Wireless Energy Harvesting (WEH) Design Competition was held during the 2012 IEEE Microwave Theory and Techniques Society (MTT-S) International Microwave Symposium (IMS2012) in Montreal, Canada. The aim of the competition was to introduce students to the concept and implementation of efficient WEH. The participants were asked to design a WEH device at 900 MHz frequency. In order to encourage students to have novelty in their designs, a weighting factor was introduced and considered in the final score calculation of each participant by the judges of the competition. The efficiency figure of merit (FoM), used as the judging criteria, was the output dc power, defined as Pout and measured in a 100 or 1,000 X load, divided by the total weight of the circuit, defined as W, and area of the whole circuit (calculated as the square of the largest dimension, denoted as D, of a WEH device.
