A simple method to localize blood vessels beneath the surface ofntissue could be very useful during laparoscopic and endoscopicnprocedures. However, the detection of blood vessels deep within tissuenusing light is limited by tissue scattering. In the study,nfrequency-domain photon migration methods were used to detect bloodnvessels within a scattering medium. The depth at which blood vesselsncould be detected was greater than 10 mm. The experimental measurementsnagree well with predictions obtained from the diffusion approximation tonthe radiative transport equation. These studies demonstrate thenpotential of frequency-domain optical methods to detect subsurface bloodnvessels
