A case study shows that an optical wavelength divisionnmultiplexing (WDM) network can be employed in a metropolitan network inna cost effective way. In part, cost savings are realized due to thentotal number of line terminals required and the fact that the dimensionsnof the electrical nodes decrease when exploiting optical cross connectsn(OXCs) to a large extent. Optical WDM rings are also an importantnbuilding element when designing a metropolitan network. A number of thenproperties of WDM rings are classified, resulting in eight differentnring architectures. Additional requirements arise when consideringnring-to-ring connections. The extent of the rings chosen for the casenstudy is validated from the transmission point of view by a simplenmodel. Finally, as an alternative to an all-optical approach, annopto-electrical approach is presented
