We document the performance of space-time block codes, whichnprovide a new paradigm for transmission over Rayleigh fading channelsnusing multiple transmit antennas. Data is encoded using a space-timenblock code, and the encoded data is split into n streams which arensimultaneously transmitted using n transmit antennas. The receivednsignal at each receive antenna is a linear superposition of the nntransmitted signals perturbed by noise. Maximum likelihood decoding isnachieved in a simple way through decoupling of the signals transmittednfrom different antennas rather than joint detection. This uses thenorthogonal structure of the space-time block code and gives a maximumnlikelihood decoding algorithm which is based only on linear processingnat the receiver. We review the encoding and decoding algorithms fornvarious codes and provide simulation results demonstrating theirnperformance. It is shown that using multiple transmit antennas andnspace-time block coding provides remarkable performance at the expensenof almost no extra processing
