We study the problem of designing an efficient resource allocationnscheme in the application of providing integrated multimedia servicesnover a digital subscriber line. For a predefined quality of servicen(QoS) requirement and data throughput, we show that the transmittednpower consumption can be reduced by applying the parallel transmissionnframework previously proposed. Data streams are recognized as a set ofnlayers with different data rate and bit error rate requirements. Thencharacteristics of the telephone channel can be utilized to providenunequal error protection naturally and thus efficiently. Simulationnresults provide comparison of the proposed parallel transmissionnframework to the existing schemes designed for general data, andndemonstrate significant performance improvement, such as a 0.5-2 dBnpower gain
