This paper deals with a receiver scheme where adaptivenequalization and channel decoding are jointly optimized in an iterativenprocess. This receiver scheme is well suited for transmissions over anfrequency-selective channel with large delay spread and for highnspectral efficiency modulations. A low-complexity soft-input soft-outputnM-ary channel decoder is proposed. Turbo equalization allows intersymbolninterference to be reduced drastically. For most time-invariant discretenchannels, the turbo-equalizer performance is close to the coded Gaussiannchannel performance, even for low signal-to-noise ratios. Finally,nresults over a time-varying frequency-selective channel proves thenexcellent behavior of the turbo equalizer
