Electrical Dinosaurs

No, not the robots in some Jurassic Park knockoff. I'm talking about some of the oddities of electrical apparatus that have come and gone within the memory of living engineers. These devices once represented the state of the art in their fields but have long ago been supplanted by more modern technology and apparatus that accomplishes the same ends. Some of these devices may still be in use in odd corners of the world, but few present-day electrical engineers have knowledge of them. This article describes a couple of these old technologies with which the author had personal experience. These descriptions are not as scholarly or well documented as most of the articles that appear in this space but are more of a memoir.
