Getting to the Midlands Engineering Centre in Birmingham for the first day of the 2001 IEE Younger Members Honorary Officers Conference meant an early start for many, and international delegates who had travelled from furthest afield had perhaps the easier option of arriving the day before. Thus the event began with delegates comparing just how early they had had to set off and how many changes of train had been required over steaming, and essential, cups of coffee. This traditional ice-breaker completed, the conference kicked off with an introduction and welcome by Katherine Jackson. The aim of this last YM conference during her tenure as chair of the Younger Members Board was clear-to guide delegates through the changes taking place within the IEE and to make sure that they returned to their Sections fully aware of how the YMB can help them in their activities.
