Competency-based licensing system planned for all pilot licences in Australia

Competency-based national standards have been implemented for the private pilot licence and, in consultation with industry, similar standards are being developed for all other flight crew licences. The goal is to improve flight instruction and the assessment of licence candidates using more objective criteria. IN the early 1990s, Australia introduced a policy of competency-based training for all industries. In response, the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) of Australia has transformed the country's flight crew licensing standards into competency-based language. This new approach to the licensing standards was adopted by CASA, with active participation from the aviation industry, and was endorsed by the Australian National Training Authority (ANTA) as the national industry standards.
