Digital Community Information Services in India: Present scenario, problems and solutions

Community information means information in the community and for the community. According to Allan Bunch, community information (CI) may be categorized in to 2 groups- Survival information and Citizen action infonvation. But, in spite of strong, heartily attempt to develop mechanism for free access to information to the community members there is a lack of integrated approach to meet the citizen action and survival infonvation for Indian citizens. In India, the Central as well as state Governments of various states started e-Govemment initiatives through web for providing services to the citizens. The purpose of the paper is to identify the categories and subcategories under which community information is classified in each web portal and study the feasibility of the categorization with the help of an unified list through a community survey. The survey was conducted in two blocks of Burdwan district with a framed questionnaire. The unified list showed similarity with the community demand. Some additional categories were suggsted by the people during survey and those were accepted.
