Implementing Institutional Repository : A Case Study of Bose Institute Library, Kolkata

Institutional Repositories are recognized as the essential infrastructure with the mechanism to store, preserve, identity and retrieve the intellectual collections including research output of the academic communities of a single institution or multi-institutions in digital form which play a crucial role in the research life cycle. IRs are becoming prevalent in the academic sector with the repid changes in technology, scholarly practices and patron expectations. Research and academic institutions are grappling to create a functional IRs to facilitate the growth in teaching, learning and research. This paper traces the concept of Institutional Repository (IR), its relevance, infrastructural requirements, selection of software and the current trends in R & D libraries of Kolkata city, with special reference to the initiatives taken by the Bose Institute Library, Kolkata.
