Heliantis for Brumath

The Brumath wastewater treat-ment station in the Bas Rhin county of France had become obsolete with its 9300 p.e. capacity as demand grew to 21,000 p.e. Population growth and the presence of an industrial estate prompted the unitary authority to design a new plant. The five local councils making up the unitary authority and its president, Jean-Pierre Jost, set themselves the goal of reducing waste volumes and recycling its sludge as farming inputs or energy source. The other weighty problem for the councils was mitigating unpleasant odours from the plant during transport and spreading. This was a frequent complaint from local residents, remarks Jost.
