We thank Endreny and Lautz for their insightfulncomments on Munz et al. (2011a) (Endreny and Lautz,n2012), which provide a forward-looking perspective onnpotential improvements of hyporheic exchange flownmodelling at the stream reach scale. On the basis of thenapplication of a MODFLOW numerical groundwaternmodel, Munz et al. (2011a) concluded from their simulationsnthat surface water infiltration into the streambed of anninvestigated 30mlong streamreach was unlikely during theninvestigated 3-month baseflow period. The model applicationnwas motivated by limitations of vertical hydraulicngradients (VHG) observations ranging between 15- andn100-cm depths and excluding the uppermost (0–15 cm)nstreambed sediments, which provided only weak indicatorsnof shallower hyporheic exchange (Rosenberry and Pitlick,n2009). VHG observations alone did, therefore, not allownconclusions about potential surface water infiltration innshallow streambed sediments outside the observationalnwindow (Munz et al., 2011a).
