摘要

In developing the 40-MW Granite Canal project in Canada, Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro had two goals: to build a new facility for renewable power generation and to protect the environment. The resulting development mitigates negative effects on fish while meeting needs for electricity in the province. The new 40-MW Granite Canal prqj-ect provides 220 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of electricity a year to Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro's grid. After Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro's system planning department projected in 1999 that deficits in capacity and energy would occur after 2002, the utility decided to develop Granite Canal as one of many sources intended to meet these deficits. The project is near Meel-paeg Reservoir within the Bay d'Espoir Hydroelectric Generating System, about 80 kilometers northwest of Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro's 612-MW Bay d'Espoir station. (See Figure 1.)
