The city of Tacoma, Department of Public Utilities, Light Division (dba Tacoma Power) has deep roots in the hydropower industry that were planted with the construction of the 24-MW LaGrande Powerhouse on the Nisqually River in Washington State. At the turn of the 20th century, the city of Tacoma's electrical system distributed power that was purchased from competing companies.
