To capitalize on the remaining hydroelectric potential in the U.S., the Department of Energy's Water Power Program has released a number of reports that assess the following water resources: unpowered dams, run-of-river hydrokinetic power, ocean wave energy and tidal energy. According to DOE, development of this potential could contribute up to 2,116 TWh/year of renewable energy, slightly more than half of the nation's annual electricity use.
