Development of the 690-mw Karahnjukar hydroelectric facility in Iceland has presented project owner Landsvirkjun with many unique challenges.These include a project location with numerous faults and difficult site geology, as well as the problems inherent with major construction in a climate where snow is on the ground eight months of the year. In the process of planning for and building this project, Landsvirkjun has developed many design, engineering, and construction innovations to keep the project on schedule and budget.The timeline for the development of Karahnjukar is particularly important because it is being built to provide electricity to the Fjaroaal aluminum smelter, owned by Alcoa of the United States.
