The decomposition of vegetation flooded during creation of a reservoir can lead to the emission of greenhouse gases. Some of these gases can decrease water quality in the reservoir and in the downstream river. By understanding these effects, project developers can implement methods to minimize greenhouse gas production from reservoirs.
