Longtan Hydropower Development Company needed a cost-effective way to supply 14 million tons of aggregates for construction of the 4,900-mw Longtan project on the Hongshui River in China. When it is completed in 2009, Longtan Dam will be the tallest roller-compacted-concrete (RCC) dam in the world at 216.5 meters. At only 400 meters wide, the construction site was too narrow to accommodate a standard fleet of trucks hauling rock from a quarry to an on-site crusher, so the developer chose an innovative mobile in-pit crushing system. The in-pit system for Longtan Dam involves using mobile equipment and conveyor belts to crush and deliver rock from a quarry about 4.5 kilometers away, lowering the cost to provide aggregates by as much as 60 percent per ton.
