IHA's viewpoint on Asia's hydropower sector

We asked Richard Taylor, executive director of the International Hydropower Association, to share his views on hydropower in Asia. Below is a transcript of that discussion. Where do you see the biggest opportunities in Asia for hydropower to contribute? Asia as a region has the greatest identified hydropower potential in the world. The growth of hydropower in southeast Asia has been dramatic, and this continues. In the rest of the continent, hydropower is being recognized as an important driver for economic development. Countries such as India and its surrounding neighbours are now becoming increasingly active, and policies are aligning to promote the use of hydroelectric power. In India, hydropower has been singled out as an extremely important renewable energy resource to help meet the country's growing demand for electricity.
