It is a condition of eligibility for most kinds of benefits that the worker be "fully insured," which is to say, that he or she have worked a prescribed amount of time in work covered for Social Security purposes. Forty quarters of coverage will fully insure any worker for life, so that a worker with 10 years of work in jobs covered by Social Security can assume that he or she is fully insured. While 40 quarters of coverage are required to fully insure most workers, fewer quarters may suffice for workers who reached age 62 before 1991 and for some employees of nonprofit organizations.
