Purpose – The article's aim is to describe the policies and practices that have helped credit-card company Capital One to achieve second place in the 2012 Great Workplaces awards. nnDesign/methodology/approach – The article explains the background to the policies and practices and their effects. It contains an interview with a Capital One employee. nnFindings – The article highlights the importance, at Capital One, of: frequent meetings between employees and managers; regular employee surveys; maintaining employees' good health and sense of well-being; wide opportunities for training and development; and involvement with the local community. nnPractical implications – How such policies and practices help to ensure a satisfied and loyal workforce are revealed. nnSocial implications – It is demonstrated that community engagement is a core part of life at the firm, which has raised more than £185,000 through recent charity initiatives led by employees. nnOriginality/value – The article provides the inside story of Capital One, which has featured among the UK's best workplaces for five consecutive years.
