In the only contested nomination battle, State Sen. Ken Cuccinelli. one of the most conservative members of the Virginia senate, handily defeated two opponents for the nomination to be state attorney general. The Pennsylvanian, who ended his House career as third-ranking Republican on the Ways and Means Committee, was a major player in tax-cut legislation and co-founded a caucus dedicated to abolishing the Alternative Minimum Tax (AMT).
