La modification de la forme naturelle de la tête est une pratique très ancienne qui constitue une forme d'identification, d'appartenance à un groupe ethnique ou à un groupe social ; pratiquée chez l'enfant, elle reste imprimée sur l'os. La déformation artificielle du crâne, en tant que résultat d'une modification non naturelle de la boîte crânienne, a fait l'objet de pratiques universellement représentées au cours de diverses époques. La déformation du crâne est le plus souvent intentionnelle et répond à des critères culturels bien établis ainsi qu'à des procédés faisant appel à des techniques précises, notamment grâce à l'utilisation d'appareils déformateurs appliqués sur le crâne du bébé dès sa naissance et durant au moins la première année de la vie.%The modification of the natural shape of the head is a very ancient practice that constitutes a mark of identification, of appertaining to an ethnic or a social group.
